Our History

The Montessori School of Lisle was founded in 1967 as the Winfield Preschool by the Flick-Reedy Corporation in Winfield, Illinois. In 1975, MSOL relocated in southeast Naperville to the lower level of what is now the Naperville Korean First Presbyterian Church. We have been at that site ever since. In 1981, Barbara B. Joniak, the administrator and longtime teacher at the school, purchased MSOL. Ms. Joniak’s conviction that the right rearing of children is our planet’s best hope for peace and a better world and her dedication to the philosophy of Maria Montessori toward that end have shaped the belief system and programs of Montessori School of Lisle over the 23 years of her service. Her daughter, Bonnie Gleespen, who has directed the school since 1991 and currently serves as consultant, follows closely the core principles established for the school while making sure that it remains a viable and growing community.

Children

Ms.Gleespen believes that the long track record of Montessori School of Lisle is due to the loyalty and longevity of its staff and its adherence to basic Montessori concepts. Anita Goel, teacher of the morning preschool program, first came to the school in 1977. Janice Knowles, the All Day teacher, joined our staff in 1986, Jeanne Sheridan in 1987, and Julie Johnson, the Afternoon teacher and the school’s Director came on board in 1992.  Shelly Bruno, our newest addition, was hired in 2003. Staff members with that kind of history are deeply invested in the school and provide both a stable environment and a wealth of experience.

The 40 years of continual operation have not only afforded an opportunity to educate but to learn as well. Time and experience have allowed administrator and teachers to develop and refine an Early Childhood Education Program that not only focuses on academic excellence but on the development of self-direction, confidence, and acquisition of good social skills. Children work in a carefully prepared environment designed after studying what motivates children to learn and what materials are needed to meet their different learning styles. Following the success stories of former graduates through the years is a testimony to the effectiveness of the program.
